Stop and call us immediately if you're having any of the following

These signs require immediate attention.

A burning or fishy smell

That is conductor insulation breaking down. The smell reliably arrives before there is anything to see. Shut that circuit off at the panel now.

A warm outlet or switch

Heat at a device means a resistive connection. In 1965–75 aluminum wiring and in back-stabbed receptacles, this is the most common pre-fire condition we find.

A breaker that will not hold

Reset once. If it trips again, stop. Every reset against a live fault degrades the mechanism that is supposed to protect you.

Half the house is dead

The classic lost-neutral or lost-leg signature. It can put 240 volts across 120-volt equipment, and it gets worse, not better.

Why people call us instead

  • The price is published before you call. Cost ranges on this site are researched market data with the source cited, not a "call for pricing" wall.
  • We pull the permit. Not you. A contractor asking you to pull an owner permit for their work is shifting liability onto you.
  • The load calculation comes before the quote. NEC Article 220, on paper. Sometimes it says you do not need the upgrade you called about.
  • A real arrival window, not a vague promise. We tell you when we can actually be there. If that is Thursday, we say Thursday — and if something is unsafe we talk you through shutting off the circuit for free while you wait.

Our winning formula

The first call

We triage on the phone. If it is unsafe we tell you what to shut off before we are on the road, at no charge.

On-site assessment

We test rather than guess: panel, affected circuits, grounding, and load under real conditions.

Written scope and price

Cause, scope and number in writing before any work starts. Permit filed by us.

Work, inspection, handover

Job done, parish inspection attended, labelled directory and permit record handed to you.

Get an estimate first

Use the cost estimator for a written range in about a minute, or call and describe the problem. Either way you get a figure before you commit to anything.

What changes the price: whether the service entrance, mast and meter can need replacing; whether the grounding electrode system passes (older services here frequently do not, often because a water-pipe bond stopped being a ground when the utility went to plastic); panel location and access; and what the load calculation actually returns. Run the estimator or read the cost guides.

DIY, cheapest bid, or permitted work

The differences that matter are mostly invisible until something goes wrong or you try to sell the house.

What you are comparing DIY or handymanCheapest bidPermitted, code-compliant work
DOPL permit and inspection Idaho does let a homeowner permit work on their own home, but most skip it entirely and the work is never inspected.Often skipped to hit the price. The liability lands on you.Permit purchased from DOPL, inspection scheduled and attended, record on file with the state.
Insurance position after a fire Unpermitted work is a common basis for a reduced or denied claim.Same exposure. An invoice does not prove code compliance.A passed state inspection is documentary evidence the work met code.
Which code edition it was built to Whatever the internet said. Usually an older edition.Quoted to the cheapest interpretation, not the adopted one.Idaho's adopted 2023 NEC with the Idaho amendments in force at permit application.
GFCI and AFCI placement Added where convenient, not where the code requires.Minimum devices to survive a glance.Placed per NEC 210.8 and 210.12 for the actual room use.
Load calculation None. The panel is sized by guess.Rule of thumb, which routinely undersizes for heat pump plus EV.NEC Article 220 calculation on paper before anything is ordered.
Lead-safe practice in pre-1978 homes Not considered. North End plaster is almost certainly lead-painted.Rarely priced in.Containment and cleanup appropriate to the age of the house.
What happens at resale Turns up in the inspection report and becomes a price negotiation.Same, with no permit record to show the buyer.State permit record and sign-off transfer with the house.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an electrician cost in Boise?

Licensed Boise electricians typically charge $80 to $140 per hour with a $50 to $100 trip charge. A 100-amp to 200-amp service upgrade runs $1,500 to $4,000, a Level 2 EV charger $500 to $2,000, and a full rewire of a 1,200 to 1,800 square foot home $12,000 to $25,000. Every range on this site is cited to its source.

How quickly can you get here?

You get a real arrival window when you call rather than a vague promise. We would rather tell you tomorrow morning and turn up than say today and miss it, which is the complaint most people have about this trade. If something is actively unsafe we will talk you through shutting off the circuit at no charge while you wait, whether or not we can reach you that day.

Do you pull the permit?

The contractor pulls it, and it comes from the state rather than the city. Idaho electrical permits are issued by the Division of Occupational and Professional Licenses and purchased online. This catches people out: a City of Boise or Ada County building permit does not replace the DOPL electrical permit, and you may need both. Idaho does allow a homeowner to purchase a permit for work they perform themselves on their own primary or secondary residence, but not for commercial property and not for a rental.

Which areas do you cover?

Boise and Ada County, plus Meridian, Nampa, Caldwell, Eagle, Kuna, Star across the Treasure Valley. You get a real arrival window when you book rather than a vague promise.

What code does Idaho enforce?

Idaho enforces the 2023 National Electrical Code with Idaho amendments, administered by the Idaho Electrical Board under IDAPA 24.39.10 and effective July 1, 2024. Code adoption moves, so confirm the edition in force with DOPL when the permit is applied for.

Why does this site publish prices when competitors do not?

Because it is the first thing anyone actually wants to know, and hiding it wastes your time and ours. The ranges are researched Treasure Valley market data with sources cited. They are not quotes; every job is priced in writing after the work has been seen.
